Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park (IGR) is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills 12 miles east of Jackson, CA. The park nestles in a little valley 2,400 feet above sea level with open meadows and large valley oaks that once provided the Native Americans of this area with an ample supply of acorns. There is a museum and Native American village here to tour. Several easyish nature trails provide views of the park and wildlife.

Yes, I finally showed up, spent the night, had a great time. Thanks to Regis and the KampnKing for throwing this!

Pros: Not too far out of the way for Sac (1-1/2 hours for an early Bay window), scenic drive, lots of vegetation between campsites so you don't feel you're too cramped.

Cons:  not enough clearance to set up the Tent of Doom, although the smaller ones fit a few sites. So probably wouldn't work for a  larger turnout. Kinda hilly. Pretty durn cold last weekend... thermies strongly suggested, heaters too.

It's worth going, imo.

Having the museum and grounds just outside the CG boundary is a plus.  I could spend all day meandering the grounds getting a feel of what it must have been like for the Native American peeps.

Generators are allowed in the CG.  ~2k' elevation.  Pines, manzanita, oaks.

Shady. Clean bathrooms and a coupla showers.  Garbage cans.  Water spigots .

No shelter would be needed except during bad weather.  The camo tarp that was used has a footprint of ~15 x ~19 and just fit in site 12.  I don't think it'd fit the other sites if spread out.  I have the option of bring the side walls straight down and can make a ~15 x ~15  or a ~15 x ~13 footprint.  I dunno if I'd use my fabric tent there just because of the potential for pine sap.  Moot point, just my hang up.

Kudos to Ralph for putting this on the calendar.  It's an easy drive.  Might have to explore more of that Rt 88 corridor in the future.

Thanks Ralph!

No no.  None of that was my fault .  It was all Ralph's doing.  He's the guilty party.
