VW Camper Family

A camping forum for VW bus and camper owners.

Hello all just wanted to say hello, I am yet another new guy jumping into the VW camper world.  I have always like older vehicles and surfing so why wouldn't I love the VW camper.  I own a 1973 Campmobile and I also have a 1978 camper as well that came with the Campmobile.  The 78 is pretty rusty so it would take a lot of repair work.  From what I know the engine can run, haven't tried to start it myself though.  I had thoughts of taking the engine from the 78 and doing some performance mods to it and trying to stick it in the 73.  Not sure it that will work but I wouldn't mind a little more power in the 73.  Besides that the 73 runs, I just gave her an EMPI exhaust, and some billet louver window cranks.  I will post pics as I can get them.  Now I just have to figure out what I want my surf van/bug out van to be named.  I am sure she will let me know when she is ready.  Can't wait to get into this group.

The '78 was fuel-injected, the '73 wasn't. If the '78 engine has a carb or carbs hacked onto it by now, the switch would be fairly straightforward, though you'll want to make sure the flywheel on the '78 engine matches up with the '73 transaxle's bell housing.
If the '78 engine still has intact fuel injection, it's harder because the gas tank in the '73 doesn't have the fuel return needed to accommodate the f.i. You'd have to switch the tank or somehow patch in a return line (switching tanks'd be the better option; don't go cutting stuff up if you don't have to). There're other things you'd have to deal with, putting an engine with f.i. into a '73; go here and start asking questions.
