Greetings all. Hope this is the correct forum for this topic.

I, for one, don't usually cook with heat, except for breakfast tasties and smores and the occasional hot dog. It's all due to the cleanup. I'm usually a lunch meat and cheese, chips and salsa kinda guy. I'm OK with that as a weekend warrior.

I am adaptable and have been starting to think about meals that require heat. Nothing wrong with a (grilled) ham and cheese, right? This will probably morph into a one pot,…

So to expand on that I just received the "Camper's Kit" from this place.

I was led to them from one of our distinguished members. Thank you for that on multiple levels.

I am anxious to try it out and the weather report for this week looks promising.

In closing, for now, this thread does not have to be solely about solar.

Please chime in with your cooking methods and choice(s) of cooker thingys.
Roughing it Easytag:vwcamperfamily.ning.com,2012-04-12:4450389:Topic:628222012-04-12T15:57:17.285Zwestywoman (Melissa)http://vwcamperfamily.ning.com/profile/MelissaMourkas

I often get blank stares when I mention enjoying a BBQ'd Pizza while camping. This is as easy as it gets. Some may call it cheating.

I often get blank stares when I mention enjoying a BBQ'd Pizza while camping. This is as easy as it gets. Some may call it cheating.

Here's the scenario......

It's Friday afternoon, you are at work and watching the clock. You have the Bus packed and reservations made. You are dieing to get out of town and on your way to join your camping buddies. You know traffic will be a nightmare.

By the time you get to your getaway location for the weekend it will be dark. You still haven't eaten and you need to set up camp. What to do?

On your way out, order up your favorite pizza. It can be a take and bake like Pappa Murphy's, one from your local deli, or a regular cooked to order pizza (my favorite).

You already know that foods cooked over a grill are tastier than the same thing prepared in the kitchen. You also know that some foods are just better the when reheated. Pizza is one of them.

Preparation is a no brainer. Chances are your camping buddies already have a fire going. If you don't have a pizza pan you can always use a slightly oiled up Weber grilling grate of appropriate size or even simple aluminum foil.

Place the pizza over the fire or charcoals (even a camp stove will work). Turn it often, every 5 minutes or so. With a spatula check the bottom to avoid burning. I like mine a little charred and crispy. When the cheeses are nicely bubbling you are ready to remove from the heat. Let it stand for a few moments and you are ready to feast.

And there you have. Fast, Easy, Very Tasty, and there is literally no clean up.

I've been following posts by Overland Gourmet on FB. They served up a righteous meal at SyncroFest last month. They specialize in food products and supplies for outdoor cooking (i.e. camping, long trips, etc.) They just posted this link to LiteHouse brand freeze-dried garlic. Turns out LiteHouse also has freeze-dried basil, now wouldn't that be fantastic?

Happy Campers Wine. For starters, I brought this label's Cabernet Sauvignon to last weekend's campout in Napa and was pleased on two fronts: one: it has a screw-top, which makes it convenient; two: the Cabernet Sauvignon was a great camping wine, not too oaky, not too much tannin, not too much sweetness. Right in-between and good for a wide range of cookery. I bought it for $5.99 on sale at the Sacramento Co-Op. It's nice to find a decent $5.99 wine for…

So how to cook my food for free?

First I found out about Solar Cookers which you can make your own for cheap and it captures the rays of the sun to cook the food. Temps get up to about 300 degrees. More like a slow cooker. Yahoo! has a solar cooker group where others display their designs and point out their flaws to help you make the most efficient cooker. I plan to create a collapsible cooker to save space.

What if I don't want to wait for a few hours to eat? If I didn't plan ahead? Here's where the Rocket Stove would come in. This can be made out of coffee cans and soup cans for free! I have these items at home, waiting to be empty. This is an efficient heat capturing method. And you only need small sticks to burn.

Once I have some practice with using these I will try to post some recipes. :) Please click on the links for more information on how you can make your own!

Does anyone else use anything like this? I haven't built my cookers just yet, one thing at a time. My hands are full with my Westy at the moment. If anyone has made one, maybe you have advice? I hope everyone thinks this optional and free way to cook is as awesome as I do!
Camping Recipestag:vwcamperfamily.ning.com,2010-02-21:4450389:Topic:44932010-02-21T23:48:57.000ZKathleen Hineshttp://vwcamperfamily.ning.com/profile/KathleenHines

Tear or cut a 1 1/2" hole out of the center of each piece of bread.
Butter bread lightly on both sides. Place each slice of bread next to
each other on a heated skillet. Crack eggs, one at a time, into the
hole of the bread. Cook on medium heat about 3 minutes. Flip the
egg/bread and cook on the other side until the eggs have set. Slide
onto a plate and serve.

Campfire eggs

note: campfire breakfast, since the most important thing is a bed of very hot coals.

Eggs can, of course, be cooked in a frying pan over the fire, but this way was more fun.

Start
by cutting oranges in half (fresh oranges travel pretty well) and juice
them, saving the juice to drink with your breakfast.

Next, remove all the orange pulp and membrane, so that the orange peel is an empty shell.

Break one egg into each orange half.

Use barbecue tongs to move the orange-eggs from the plate to the hot coals. rounded side down

Two sticks can be used if you don't have a set of tongs, but that's a less stable way to move things.

After
a few minutes, the egg will bubble and cook. Keep a close eye on your
campfire cooking, because there is no exact cooking time here.

Serve with salt and pepper. The egg will have a pleasant orange flavor.

Raisin Cinnamon Egg Squares

This tasty breakfast includes fruit, eggs and bread for a diverse meal in just minutes.

You need: 12 slices of cinnamon raisin bread, 4 eggs, 3 tablespoons of milk, butter or cooking oil

To make: Beat the milk and eggs together in a bowl until completely mixed.
Heat butter or oil in a griddle or pan. Soak each slice of cinnamon
raisin bread in the egg mixture. Fry the bread on each side until it is
golden brown. Tastes great by itself and served with canned fruit,
butter, powdered sugar or maple syrup over the top.

Breakfast Burrito's -

There are two ways to make these...
First way is to scramble some eggs and mix in chopped/sautéed sausage. Or Bacon.

Heat a soft flower tortilla directly over the stove burner for a few seconds on each side.

Remove and butter one side.

Fill with egg/sausage mixture, add cheese, sour cream & salsa as desired.

The other way is to fry up a couple eggs, and also fry up a couple of sausage patties.

Heat tortilla as described above.

Place two fried eggs on tortilla, then two sausage patties.

Add a couple slices of cheese, sour cream and salsa as desired.

Both are simple to make, easy to handle, and the kids love them!

-LUNCH/ DINNER-

Taco in a Bag

Ingredients:
- Browned & seasoned ground meat
- Individual serving size bags of your favorite corn chips
- Shredded cheese
- Shredded lettuce
- Chopped tomatoes
- Sour cream
- Salsa
- Other (chopped onion, jalapenos etc.)
Directions:Take an individual bag of chips and smash (without opening bag). I really want an easy way to make great coffee. I would find it pure luxury to have instant hot water available in my van ( Like from the tap). If any one has any ideas I would love to hear it. I tried to get my husband to install a Keurig single serve pod coffee machine but he says no go.
Currently I think boiling water and using a french press is the best I do.
