4-7-13 update: I just confirmed with Ranger Chris that we are all set and a go for this year. He's excited to host us once again.

NEW THIS YEAR:
We are announcing the "Big Blue's Adventurer Award".

It's easy. This year, we'll note the miles on your bus in a spreadsheet. Next year, in 2015, when you come back to Bus City, we'll note the miles again. The one with the most miles wins each year.

Also Schoolhouse owns 30 acres across the street and a private beach just for the campground. It's just a five minute walk down the river trail. So bring your swim suits!

Hey BIG BLUE, I love the sound of your "Big Blue's Adventurer Award". If I could count the miles over the past few years, I might be in for an award :) Not been out much the last six months. Very much hoping to make it to this wonderful gathering.

Well everybody, it looks like I won't be able to make this trip after all.  I saved up my money for a year and bought a new/rebuilt GEX International engine and had it installed by a good mechanic friend up in Woodland, CA.  I just got her back 3 months ago.  2 weeks ago she started sounding weird.  When I started to find a local VW mechanic who could fix the problem.  I called Freds, Tassi, and a few other shops, but as soon as I said the words GEX they said they did not want to look at my Bus engine.  Finally Bruce at Bugformance said he would look at her.  He told me tonight that the valves are not opening.  He thinks the Cam & lifters are wiped out.  Not even 200 miles on the new engine.  I bought the extended warranty on the engine, but every mechanic I talk to says GEX engines are bad.  I have spent over $4500 so far... and I'm back to square one.  Even if they exchange it, I'm not sure I want a GEX in my bus.  Does anyone have any good advise?  Thanks. No GEX.  Never.

I wish my mechanic friend would have known about this.  I have certainly found out the hard way.  What engine name is good?

Comment by regis101 on April 9, 2014 at 9:01pm

No worries.  We've all gone through it.  Browse around on thesamba for engine info.

Most of the time the answer you will get is, the best engine is the one you build.

Well this is crap i was looking forward to meeting ya. Sorry about the GEX, small animals and children cry when that name is said out loud.

I can't think of any other company that has killed more vw bus driver's dreams than GEX, pure rubbish.  If you can, get your money back.  If you want a recommendation for a quality rebuilder, this would be my choice
