Event Description

Berlin, a turn-of-the-century mining town, is preserved in a state of arrested decay. A trail through the town site tells the story of Berlin and its mine. Ichthyosaurs (pronounced “ick-thee-o-sores”) were ancient marine reptiles that swam in a warm ocean covering central Nevada 225 million years ago. Remains of these giant marine vertebrates are on display at the park’s Fossil House, and these official state fossils are a primary attraction for visitors from throughout the world. The park is east of Gabbs via State route 844.

Please RSVP as Robin, local park ranger, is expecting a head count for reservations...hee-hee.  There is a camping fee which is under $20 a night.  WARNING: this is a very rural camp area...very difficult to locate an afternoon beverage if not supplied in your cooler.

My friend Al gave me a book entitled" Traveling America's Loneliest Road-A Geologic and Natural History Tour through Nevada along U.S Highway 50". I'm only about 6 pages into this and I recommend it for anyone traveling on 5o to get to the campout. US 50 follows an original Pony Express Route, amongst other overland travel routes. I have driven this road many times and never stopped to understand what is going on along the roadway. I was always intending to reach some destination. Happy trails!

Well, I enjoyed the creativity in the comments above and you almost had me convinced :)  but then Blake mentioned it was going to take us 6!!! hours to get there.  So, sorry guys, I hope to see you all soon, it just won't be in NV.  Have a fabulous trip!!

The history of Nevada is very interesting. I have a book called The Complete Nevada Traveler, and it also gives info on the pony express, mining, ect. It gives a little history about each town too.

Over much hemming and hawing, I'm regretfully pulling out of the Ichthyosaur trip. The reasons are lame, (12 hours of driving and work scheduled a company wide meeting on that Friday). Sorry to get everyone spun up about caravanning. We'll have to catch up at Finnon. Have a great trip and take lots of pictures! -Blake
