VW Newbie

Hey all!  My name is Carrie and I just bought my first VW in November 2010: my '74 Westfalia named Otto.  I was soooo sick of people naming their cars "chick" names, so that's why I picked a masculine name for him.  Otto and I live in Fairfield, OH which is just north of Cincinnati.  Unfortunately, I brought him home from Nashville where I bought him JUUUUUST before the cold weather hit.  So I have not camped with him yet.  I HAVE, however, been lucky enough to take him out on a handful of warm days we've had here on the outskirts of the winter.  I have taken him to 3 parks so far for the day with friends and family....fishing, hanging out, photography, exploring the beautiful outdoors... Otto fits right in!  Yesterday I broke the "body work in progress" seal, so I'm very excited to do some work on him.  BUUUT it can't take away from our quality CRUISIN time!

I've already scheduled to take Otto and a couple friends to the great mountains of West Virginia to the annual All GOod Music Festival in July--but that's by NO means the first time I shall camp with him.  Planning on camping with a couple friends this weekend at Paint Creek as a matter of fact (in central rural Ohio).

That's all I got for now!  I feel like owning and being interested in classic cars is all too frequenty viewed as a "guy thing" so it makes me really happy that there's a group dedicated to chicks and our V-dubs!  I'm on facebook so look me up, and if you're in the Cincinnati area and wanna hang out and get into some trouble, give me a shout and I'll do the same for you all :)

Cheers, Terry. That would be so lovely to meet you. How far away are you from the Cleveland area? I also have a few facebook friends in Columbus. My contact at LEAKOIL is Howie and he has been an internet friend from the beginning of my maiden voyage in Dec 2009. He has a cousin with MG and is hoping the club can support my efforts with some kind of event.

Do you follow my van on Facebook or read the blog - because I can hardly keep up with writing those and that is the way I inform people about plans for the trip, etc.

Sorry if you have written to me there and I've forgotten. Right now I'm rather disoriented by being in London with a list of repair jobs, trying to co-ordinate tradesmen and jobs and also trying to manage without internet at my little ole' house.

As I mentioned above the blog/website is at http://yeswecanjourney.wordpress.com/2011/01/29/a-cause-for-our-new and from there you'll find a link to the van's facebook page.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can help us with our awareness building and fundraising, and more basic things such as a shower, washing machine etc when on the road.

Can't believe I'm gonna do this. London is like being in another world.

    Cheers again!

    HI Carole,

Cleveland is about 2 hrs from Toledo. It makes a triangle if you go from Cleveland to Columbus to Toledo.Toledo is due west of Cleveland on the turnpike.  I have a washing machine, shower and hot meal if you are in the area. Let me know when you may be able to make it. Best of luck in your travels. I am green with envy.
