When ever I got to a new state, I look for National Forests, and go to get info and a map from headquarters. They are always very helpful in sharing the regulations. Most often there is some form of camping in unimproved sites for free.
Water Canyon near Winnemucca Nevada is a free campground operated by the BLM with clean Toilet facilities and great hikes and views (particularly during wildflower season) Enjoy :)
McCain Valley near Boulevard, CA right off Interstate 8. Clean primitive campground. 14 miles in on a dirt road. $6 per night but rangers do not come every day. This is in BLM land. Views are nice as well as the hiking.
elk city park, Oklahoma.
from I-40 head South on route 6 about 1.5 miles. turn right onto Lake View then left onto Washington. park is about 3/4 mile on the Right, there are 5 RV sites with power hook ups and free at a 3 day maximum. Pit toilets and no running water but a nice quiet lake side spot.
If you're in Texas and happen to smack dab in the middle of it. Visit Barefoot Fishing Camp in Bend Texas. Right on the Mighty Muddy Colorado River they have primitive camp (busses welcome) for $5/night/person, as well as RV spots (though limited)
The camp is privately owned so there aren't any rangers, there's not even a gate attendant, you pull up put some cash in a box, take and fill out your own tag. It's truly based on honesty.
Make sure to bring your fishing poles and catfish bate, as there have been some grandiose cat's pulled out of those muddy waters.
It also makes for a nice paddle if you happen to have a boat.
"Top Of The World" - If you are planning to go through big sur in california there are a few (rare) nice spots that you can camp out for free. If you're headed south on Hwy 1, just past the entrance to Plasket Creek campground there is a fire road on the left side. The conditions of the road vary year to year due to rain and vehicles. I've been up it when its theres problem and i've been on it where there are HUGE washouts. There are quite a few camp spots with fire pits that people have made. If you make it to the top, the view you have is unbelievable (See "Top Of The World Photo").
This barge is not for everyone. I have made it all the way up in a full camper westy with no problem, but if you have any doubt in your ride, dont do it!
Quartzsite Arizona off I-10 close to California~ literally a town of RVs, hardly any permanent houses! You can camp here for free for very long periods of time. You just have to move every so often. Also good site for gold and other semi precious stones and of course Quartz!
Hello, If you like steelhead fishing up and around Stanley, Id the forest service opens the campgrounds early in the season when the snow melts and you don't have to pay one red cent. The bathrooms were even open. It can get a little chilly but there is some great spots along the Salmon River that are gorgeous. Plus the sawtooths are amazing http://www.penstemon.org/Idaho07Preview.htm
There are free campgrounds along some rivers in Florida that are intended for boaters and fisherpeople. I will try to post locations. I have stayed at a couple and they were basic (toilet, outside shower, shade, boat ramp) but very pleasant. stay tuned...
If you're in the midwest or eastern area... Daniel Boone National Forest/Red River Gorge is a wonderful place to camp! A 3-day pass is $8 I think. Pick one of a few long and winding gravel/dirt roads that take you through the forest, park alongside the road, and hike to a spot. Most people generally tent camp in the woods...but even in the bus just along the road is in the middle of a national forest--peaceful, and beautiful! And you will have a nice place to have a fire and roast some marshmellows and have a good time! Plenty of great scenic rock formations to discover. This is the most beautiful place I've ever been [so far!]

Anyone if this list is still accurate? (Web pages tend to be made and then forgotten, which is why I ask.)
