On a pop top they will whether directed straight at the sun or not still operate effectively a solar panel does not require to be directed straight at teh sun as far as i know, as long as its getting light it will charge...
Case in point my bus lies for weeks, if not months at hoem unused at times pre getting a small windscreen mounted solar panel the battery was frequently flat now with it installed simply stuck with suckers to the bottom of my windscreen, out of the way connected via the cigar lighter socket it provides enough top up/trickle charge to ALWAYS start her never has it failed to start since fitting, Scotland is never sunny in terms of what you guys get and it remains charged all i want is them permanently mounted out the way, and always wired up..
Your dead right as regards security whilst on a site, suitcase ones are fine and dandy if you do not intend leaving your campsite once camped there, however if like most you want to view the attractions with-in the selected area to ensure there safety you would be forcecd to put them in the vehicle thus removing any charging they would of done during tis time thus defeating the purpose..
I would think that current bonding agents would suffice to keep them safely on the panel if that panel was prepared correctly before fitting some sort of bracket would be a not bad idea i suppose if it could be incorporated so as to move the panel through x degrees top try and catch the best rays....
Many pops have roofbars, Kyak racks and such like bonded to them so i can see no real issue with the fitment of some sort of brackets or rack in order to fit the panels to.....

I know i wouldn't even consider them if they could not be permanantly roof fitted we carry enough without adding to n already cramped space, anyone got these use these or fitetd these
