VW Camper Family

A camping forum for VW bus and camper owners.

Hi, as a new member I d like to know if (probably a lot) some of you went to the Grand Canion and from wich entry, road or trail(if I can drive it). If you know the best camping spots in that area, any details or things and places to avoid. Thank s.

In another mather, I bought my 1992 eurovan last year and the frig was not working at the time. I can ear the motor running but no cold coming out of it. They made that frig only one year, model 1140 working on 12v and 120v only. No propane. It was told to me it was working on amonia instead of freon...dont know for shure yet. Does anyone had that problem before, if it s fixable or where iI can get another frig that would fit in replacement. Thank s again. Luc

Luc,

New guy here too. I can't speak specifically about the  equipment in your 1992 but  I do know a little about absorbtion and compressor refrigerators.

The absorbtion type (which does contain ammonia) cools through percolation.  Keeping them level is very critical and when they quit, they quit unless you can pinpoint a problem with the heating system (i.e. electric or gas parts).  They are repairable but it is practically impossible to find someone to repair them.  And if you can find a repairman, the cost is usually astronomic.  Invariably, it is cost effective to just buy a brand new refrig.

On the other hand, the compressor type refrigerator is much cheaper to buy,  usually lasts a long time,  does not necessarily need to be perfectly level and can usually be readily repaired.  If it konks out , it can be replaced fairly cheaply.  The compressor type can be available in a 12volt/120volt combination.

It sounds like this is what you have.  If you can hear the compressor running, it cannot be an absorbtion type.  An absorbtion type does not have a compressor and therefore operates silently.I would pull it out and take it to a refrigerator or A/C repaiman for a diagnosis and estimate.  Short of that, I would just bite the bullet and spring for a new 12volt/120volt unit that would fit in your space.

An RV supplier such as PPL in Houston can provide a variety of RV refrigerators.  Another option for a compressor type refrigerator is an outfit called Compact Appliances.  You can find them on the internet.

Good luck.  Let us know what you find.
