"Top Of The World" - If you are planning to go through big sur in california there are a few (rare) nice spots that you can camp out for free.  If you're headed south on Hwy 1, just past the entrance to Plasket Creek campground there is a fire road on the left side.  The conditions of the road vary year to year due to rain and vehicles.  I've been up it when its theres problem and i've been on it where there are HUGE washouts.  There are quite a few camp spots with fire pits that people have made.  If you make it to the top, the view you have is unbelievable (See "Top Of The World Photo").

This barge is not for everyone.  I have made it all the way up in a full camper westy with no problem, but if you have any doubt in your ride, dont do it!

Quartzsite Arizona off I-10 close to California~ literally a town of RVs, hardly any permanent houses!   You can camp here for free for very long periods of time.  You just have to move every so often.  Also good site for gold and other semi precious stones and of course Quartz!

Hey Laura Anne!  You must be still on the road.  That's great!  There are LOTS of places like that in AZ and MUCH prettier than Quartzsite.  Buy an Arizona Backroads Altas and go for it!  The Mogollon Rim area is my favorite area.  If you're still in the area the Tucson Bus MOB (all were at Havasu) is having a campout at Colossal Cave the weekend of April 9th & 10th.  Lou & I won't be there but the group would love for you to join them.  There's a Colossal Cave exit off Interstate 10 just east of Tucson.  Also there's Bugorama in Phoenix on March 27th.  later..........Glynda

Hello, If you like steelhead fishing up and around Stanley, Id the forest service opens the campgrounds early in the season when the snow melts and you don't have to pay one red cent. The bathrooms were even open. It can get a little chilly but there is some great spots along the Salmon River that are gorgeous. Plus the sawtooths are amazing http://www.penstemon.org/Idaho07Preview.htm

"Enroute" campsites in California

Anyone if this list is still accurate? (Web pages tend to be made and then forgotten, which is why I ask.)

There are free campgrounds along some rivers in Florida that are intended for boaters and fisherpeople. I will try to post locations. I have stayed at a couple and they were basic (toilet, outside shower, shade, boat ramp) but very pleasant. stay tuned...
