VW Camper Family

A camping forum for VW bus and camper owners.

Hi,

I have an 86' Vanagon GL Camper camper with an automatic transmission problem. All forward gears (1,2,3) are just fine, but the reverse is now slipping under pressure.

This was working fine before I took it to a shop to have the crankcase oil seal replaced. They claim there is nothing they could have done to cause this.

I'm hopeful that possibly they did do something.  Perhaps something is "out of place"... "loose linkage bolt", "bent cable", "bent shifter arm"?

If I took it to a good mechanic (not transmission shop) could they determine any of the above?

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I am wondering why you don't want to take it to a "transmission" shop?
How many miles on this tranny? I had one go out in just the same way once: the reverse started showing failure before the forward gears did. If you can tell the forum where you are geographically, maybe someone can recommend a reliable "transmission" specialist for these trannies. These are my thoughts...WetWillie
