VW Camper Family

A camping forum for VW bus and camper owners.

Hey all!  My name is Carrie and I just bought my first VW in November 2010: my '74 Westfalia named Otto.  I was soooo sick of people naming their cars "chick" names, so that's why I picked a masculine name for him.  Otto and I live in Fairfield, OH which is just north of Cincinnati.  Unfortunately, I brought him home from Nashville where I bought him JUUUUUST before the cold weather hit.  So I have not camped with him yet.  I HAVE, however, been lucky enough to take him out on a handful of warm days we've had here on the outskirts of the winter.  I have taken him to 3 parks so far for the day with friends and family....fishing, hanging out, photography, exploring the beautiful outdoors... Otto fits right in!  Yesterday I broke the "body work in progress" seal, so I'm very excited to do some work on him.  BUUUT it can't take away from our quality CRUISIN time!

I've already scheduled to take Otto and a couple friends to the great mountains of West Virginia to the annual All GOod Music Festival in July--but that's by NO means the first time I shall camp with him.  Planning on camping with a couple friends this weekend at Paint Creek as a matter of fact (in central rural Ohio).

That's all I got for now!  I feel like owning and being interested in classic cars is all too frequenty viewed as a "guy thing" so it makes me really happy that there's a group dedicated to chicks and our V-dubs!  I'm on facebook so look me up, and if you're in the Cincinnati area and wanna hang out and get into some trouble, give me a shout and I'll do the same for you all :)

Hi Carrie,

I'm Terry and I live in Toledo. I think we are the only Ohioans in the club. I have an 84 Vanagon, Country Homes Camper. Her name is the Gyspsy Woman.  I bought her in May of '10 and drove her home from Riverside CA.  We went to the Kombie's on Kelly's Camp out last fall and had a ball. There were 72 campers there. You should consider it for this Fall.

I think we're the only Ohioans on the site at all it seems like!  A lot of the members and info on here is either down south of us, or on the west coast.  The mideast needs to join the VW club haha.  Any cool places to explore in the area?  I'm excited to go to West Virginia for the first time this summer, but I'd like to explore rural Ohio sometime soon too.

I am very excited for All Good! I have not been before - which is just awful because it's basically in my backyard here ya know! So it will be my first time there, and the Vanagon's first festival =)

And I love meeting other VW'ers on here that are from the nearby area! Terry, if you know of any other campouts that are remotely close, let us know!

Hi Tara, I am just so excited to know that there is another VW woman in the state. I work with a girl who's family has 3 VW's and goes to the Kombie's on Kellys, but does not belong to the group. There were several other campers there that were from Ohio, but again not members. Maybe we can chat them up and get them to join. I am a single female VW owner. Don't know how many other singles there are in the group. Welcome and hope to meet you in the near future.

When is the All Good camp out and where. I don't know anything about it.

Hello gals,

It's great to see you all so excited about meeting up. I am in the UK this month in my home town of London and my 71 Westy is nicely tucked up in the garage in Massachusetts waiting for my return. I'm hoping to get sponsorship for our big cross country fundraising roadtrip which will take place later this year, fingers crossed.

I hope to be taking in Ohio because we've been invited by the LEAKOIL group to drop by. They may be helping us organize a local event.

If you can meet us or help us get some sponsors, spread the word, etc, please reply by way of adding a comment on the website at http://yeswecanjourney.wordpress.com/2011/01/29/a-cause-for-our-new... where you'll find lots more information about why I am driving all over the place.

Cheers,

Carole

I'm actually from West Virginia - I don't think I made that clear in my first reply, oops! But I think you Ohioans are the closest to me on here though! :)

Terry, All Good is a Music Festival that takes place in WV the 3rd weekend of July! http://www.allgoodfestival.com/

Hi Tara,

Sounds like I need to include Virginia - how far is West Virginia from NC as I'm planning an eastern seaboard first phase before the summer - MA, RI, CT, NY, PA, DE, (? Virginia) NC, SC, and AL.

Then after summer I'll be going across country to include OH, IL, MO, NE, and CO.

Any thoughts? Perhaps you could take a look at my weblink mentioned above and let me know?

Carole

Hi Carole,

LEAKOIL is near Cleveland, I am in Toledo. If you get this way I hope to get a chance to meet you. Keep me posted on your travel plans.

Think Spring !!

Cheers, Terry. That would be so lovely to meet you. How far away are you from the Cleveland area? I also have a few facebook friends in Columbus. My contact at LEAKOIL is Howie and he has been an internet friend from the beginning of my maiden voyage in Dec 2009. He has a cousin with MG and is hoping the club can support my efforts with some kind of event.

Do you follow my van on Facebook or read the blog - because I can hardly keep up with writing those and that is the way I inform people about plans for the trip, etc.

Sorry if you have written to me there and I've forgotten. Right now I'm rather disoriented by being in London with a list of repair jobs, trying to co-ordinate tradesmen and jobs and also trying to manage without internet at my little ole' house.

As I mentioned above the blog/website is at http://yeswecanjourney.wordpress.com/2011/01/29/a-cause-for-our-new and from there you'll find a link to the van's facebook page.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can help us with our awareness building and fundraising, and more basic things such as a shower, washing machine etc when on the road.

Can't believe I'm gonna do this. London is like being in another world.

Cheers again!

Carole

HI Carole,

Cleveland is about 2 hrs from Toledo. It makes a triangle if you go from Cleveland to Columbus to Toledo.Toledo is due west of Cleveland on the turnpike.  I have a washing machine, shower and hot meal if you are in the area. Let me know when you may be able to make it. Best of luck in your travels. I am green with envy.
