Did you ever wonder where the historic Western Pacific railroad tracks went from the Keddie Wye? The main line goes east over the Sierra but a branch line turns to the north. It is known as the Highline. It follows Indian Creek to the north. It passes by Crescent Mills and Lake Almanor.
We're camping in Taylorsville, a few miles east of the Highline tracks. Taylorsville has a great market with high quality meats, home-made sausages, sandwiches and other grocery items. The Taylorsville campground is a half-mile east of town, along Indian Creek. There is patchy cell service in the campground. Bring your bike to ride into town!
Those of you familiar with Hallsted Campground-Taylorsville is about 17 miles to the north.
No reservations needed. There's plenty of room. If we get 5 or more, the host will reserve sites for us. Bring a table, not all sites have tables. It's an open, grassy campground with nice tree cover. Sites are casual, not highly defined. No electric. Modern bathrooms with flush toilets. Showers require quarters. $14/night.
Such a great weekend! Loved the scenery, good friends, amazing food from the Taylorsville Market and the lovely Fall weather. Thanks Melissa for planning this event. I can't wait to go back and do it all again :)
We had a critical mass of 8 campers and a late-comer, making it 9! Bugs were at a minimum, warm in the afternoon and cool at night. Some yellowing of the autumn leaves. And we could hear the train whistle of the Highline way off in the distance. Good times, nice park and great camp hosts. What's not to like? Thanks to all who made the trek, it was a long one for Laura, Mike, Joel and especially Gene.
Just got back. I had so much fun ,I decided to camp at Sandy Beach last night.
I just made it home...
After a long detour to Several hot springs in the deserts of Cali and Oregon, and a visit to Lava Beds National Monument, (which I highly recommend.) Awesome lava tubes to get lost in.
I also recommend the Taylorsville Museum... I went there after the campout and was most impressed by the lapidary artwork by a local artist.
The jade and precious gem and stone carvings were quite impressive to say the least.
The best part was meeting the artist, well into his 90's who was on hand to personally show his collection that took him 50 years to create.
Definitely a fun campout not to be missed next year!
