PLEASE NOTE: CAMPGROUND HAS NO MORE RESERVATIONS AVAILABLE as of August 28.
Not too far from Yosemite is the Summerdale Campground in the Sierra National Forest. Crowds should be gone, weather cooling. The campground features campsites surrounding a meadow at about 5,000'. Look at the pictures of the sites and the driveway lengths as you choose your campsites, not all will accommodate 2 busses. The campground is east of Merced, off Highway 41 in Fish Camp, about 188 miles from Sacramento and 166 miles from Livermore. This is not an organized event. You are on your own to figure it out and what to do, but below is useful information. The entrance to Yosemite is quite nearby.
This is the link to the campground:
The Yosemite Sugar Pine Railroad is nearby and runs a steam engine excursion train.
Nelder Grove is also in the vicinity, offering the opportunity to walk among giant sequoias without the crowds of Mariposa Grove in Yosemite.
Feel free to get the answers to your questions, John, and share with the group.
Well, their website isn't very informative... it says that fires are prohibited except in certain designated areas, but it doesn't say what those areas are. I think we'll have to make contact with the rangers there for clarification.
And there's a "burn where you buy" thing on the website, but no mention of whether you can buy it on-site. I was hoping that there would be somebody with experience at that campground who could chime in.
As of tonight, the entire campground is now booked. No more reservations available. That's all, folks!
John, I don't think any of us have been here before, so we're all just figuring it out as we go. I say, bring wood, bring wine!
My slot is still available to share. And Deb has had a strained leg, which means that she probably won't come.
I just got off the phone with the Bass Lake Forest Service office, which has jurisdiction for this area. The friendly person said:
1. Fires are allowed in the provided firepits at the campground, but she didn't know whether it was available on-site from the caretakers. She recommended that we bring our own, and said that there was a Von's Supermarket on the way which sold it. Joe told me yesterday that the cheapest firewood can be found at Winco ... something like $3.50 per bundle of pine. While there is a ban on bringing wood from one county to another, apparently that doesn't apply to wood bought at a supermarket or hardware store. (I've emailed the California Firewood Task Force for clarification on this policy, and I'll let you know what they say.)
2. There is water on site, although the web page for the site said in one place that there was water, and in another place that there wasn't. If you have water sensitivities, you might want to bring your own drinking water.
3. The wasps that plagued Joe and me at Silver Fork do not appear to be a problem down where Summerdale is. Thank Gawd!
A little buzz never hurt no one :P
"A little buzz?" I got stung twice last night and once this morning. They still hurt. So I got no sympathy for them little buggers.
Yahoo! One more week! I still have a share open at end of summer rates.
1 week + 2 days... just sayin :P
1 week and a wake-up! I will be there Thursday.
