VW Camper Family

A camping forum for VW bus and camper owners.

On the Laurentian side (where water flows into the Arctic Ocean) of the park. The landscape is drier here, and bears are (allegedly) more abundant.

It's likely to be full up by early evening. Showers (not many though), running water, flush toilets. It's a good distance from the main road, so road noise should be zilch. The deer around here are totally habituated to people, but don't expect to be petting them. We thought the ranger presentation (on placenames in the park, when we went) was good.
Like almost every campground in GNP it has at least one good hike leading away from it; in this case Otokomi Lake is a few miles into the mountains (sometimes closed for bears though). (Upper) St. Mary Lake is just across the road and offers plenty of leisurely lakeside walking with incredible views. There are also boat tours of the lake. Depending upon which way you cross the park, this is the best stop (East to West) before you go over the pass the next day, or, going West to East, a good place to stop if you don't want to make a huge drive back home around the bottom of the park (depending on where home is, I guess).
$20/night (plus park admission), eighty-something spots in open conifer forest. Some of them can take a couple VWs.
