When ever I got to a new state, I look for National Forests, and go to get info and a map from headquarters. They are always very helpful in sharing the regulations. Most often there is some form of camping in unimproved sites for free.

McCain Valley near Boulevard, CA right off Interstate 8. Clean primitive campground. 14 miles in on a dirt road. $6 per night but rangers do not come every day. This is in BLM land. Views are nice as well as the hiking.

elk city park, Oklahoma.
from I-40 head South on route 6 about 1.5 miles. turn right onto Lake View then left onto Washington. park is about 3/4 mile on the Right, there are 5 RV sites with power hook ups and free at a 3 day maximum. Pit toilets and no running water but a nice quiet lake side spot.

If you're in Texas and happen to smack dab in the middle of it. Visit Barefoot Fishing Camp in Bend Texas. Right on the Mighty Muddy Colorado River they have primitive camp (busses welcome) for $5/night/person, as well as RV spots (though limited)

The camp is privately owned so there aren't any rangers, there's not even a gate attendant, you pull up put some cash in a box, take and fill out your own tag. It's truly based on honesty.

Make sure to bring your fishing poles and catfish bate, as there have been some grandiose cat's pulled out of those muddy waters.
It also makes for a nice paddle if you happen to have a boat.

They do close for hunting season, Nov - Dec.
