California Free Sites:
Many of these are hike-in and not suitable for our VWs but there are some contenders here:

Castle Lake camp in Shasta CA. There is a Ntl forest campground first come first served limited stay, or just up the road dispersed camping. I have stayed at both and have no preference. Castle lake is just up the road, swimming, paddling, hiking trails abound. Lake Shastina is really close too. Best free water at the town spigot in shasta, fill up before you set up camp!
