Event Description

There continues to be highway construction and related delays in the Feather River Canyon/Highway 70. Check 511.org before you travel. SR 70 is currently closed. There will also be construction on I-80 west of Truckee. The campground is only available from the east by way of Quincy (70/89) or Greenville (89).

The Historic Feather River Railroad route runs on the opposite side of the river from the campground. Trains climb and descend the grade at all hours-you will be falling asleep to the rumble of the diesel engines and the squeal of steel wheels on the tracks. If you have never driven through the Feather River Canyon, it is a real treat! The weather can be variable in June.

Those looking for hot springs can find them a couple miles up the road. Formerly known as "Woody's", the Feather River Hot Springs are now associated with an RV park and cabins. I think you need to call to make a reservation.

The Twain Store is walking distance from the campground and has ice, ice cream, deli items, breakfast and lunch, beer and much more.

The camp host should have firewood for sale.

Note: I got this from Reservation.gov a few minutes ago:

This is an update related to your reservation at HALLSTED. The dates affected are 5/28/2024 - 9/30/2024.

Thank you for your camping reservation on the Plumas National Forest.

Highway 70 Eastbound from Oroville is closed, with no estimation of re-opening; however, the campground can be accessed on Westbound highway 70 from Quincy or Highway 89 to 70 from Greenville.

For more information you can call the Mt. Hough Ranger District office at (530) 283-0555. Or you can check the Caltrans Highway Conditions website: https://roads.dot.ca.gov/roadscell.php.

Thank you.

That is nearly identical to the email I received on 4/24/2024. Good luck everyone!

I also received the, " keep yinz posted", email.  I'm not giving up.  I'm still thinking of trying the Marysville to La Porte to Quincy road.  Slower perhaps but scenic, if memory serves.

I was just looking at the Caltrans site and it looks like Hwy 70 is open now. Anyone else see something different?

Here is what I found:

Just looked at the Caltrans site today and found this for Route 70:

[IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
1-way controlled traffic from West Cresta to East Cresta (Butte Co) 24 hrs a day 7 days a week thru 9/29/25 - Due to bridge work

1-way controlled traffic at various locations from 6.2 mi east of Rich Bar to 6.6 mi west of the North Jct of SR 89 (Plumas Co) 24 hrs a day 7 days a week thru 1500 hrs on 7/3/24 - Due to construction - Motorists are subject to delays of up to 15 minutes

... so it looks like it will be open, but be prepared for long waits at the one-lane closure sites.

I'm in Quincy. I had success with the Marysville-La Porte-Quincy road. It is def a twisty uphill drive from Marysville. It gets a bit narrow from La Porte to Quincy. Read the map for info. Some , maybe most is a 35-50 mph drive. There is evidence of on going logging and thinning of the forest along the roadway. I blew through there before the days projects started, if there is any. I was on this road before a coupla handful of years ago. But I was driving from Quincy to Maryville. The down hill was helpful. I'm not telling anyone to take this route. It's paved all the way. It's scenic. Your clutch and brakes will get a workout. You do you.

I'm not sure if there was talk of a pot luck for Saturday. I'll have some standard finger foods in case a Munchie Madness comes to fruition. It worked well for the Cabin Fever Campout last February.

I guess I could do a rice dish.
