Event Description

Train Spotting will return in 2013. We will be going back to the Feather River Canyon-Hallsted Campground in the Plumas National Forest.  Hallsted has been refurbished and "improved" with new bathrooms with showers (!), a second path to the river, 7 sites now have electric hookups, sites are shifted around, there are new site furnishings, etc. There is also one pull-through site for a large RV. It sounds really nice but will be different from the forgotten little campground we are used to. Reservations now available at:

http://www.recreation.gov/welcome.do

The Historic Feather River railroad route runs on the opposite side of the river from the campground. Trains climb and descend the grade at all hours-you will be falling asleep to the rumble of the diesel engines and the squeal of steel wheels on the tracks. If you have never driven through the Feather River Canyon, it is a natural and cultural resource treat!

Reservations now available at recreation.gov. Search for Hallsted. I have booked site no. 11. There are non-electric sites for $23 and electric hook-up sites for $36. The Twain Store is in walking distance from the campground, so beer and ice are available, as well as ice cream bars for the kids.

I might be able to make this one.  Years past, I couldn't due to fam stuff and school.  This year, they get out on the 13th and Amy did not sign up for dance class so no recital.  Kinda leaves that weekend open.

I replied as a maybe because the Rec and Reserveam sites are down.  I'll try again tomorrow.

But I am looking forward to it.  Yea.

I got through on the reservation site tonight, but don't worry- there's never been anyone but us there that weekend! There could be reservation hiccups. Someday, I'll fill you in on how disorganized the management company is, even after I tell them we're gong to fill half their campground!

And I have reserved spot 13 for myself and another vehicle (any takers?).

I just booked site 15.  Will share with another.

The map does indeed look different.  IIRC, #15 is nestled back in the corner.  I think Joel was there a few years back.

The gypsy in me wants to do a recon for some pic's of the new and improved(?) Hallsted CG.  We'll see.

Yes, the map is different. Let me know, Regis, if you want to do a recon mission. I put it off because I got such great descriptions of the work that was done from the management company that I decided it is a GO even if unseen. But I'd love a trip up the Feather River Canyon on some upcoming weekend. Could probably drag Shari along with us kicking and screaming.

No real worries, then.  I trust your judgement.  But if I get a free weekend between now and then...

I think this is a direct link to the campground info for those who were as lost as I was :-)  Hallsted

Wow, folks have already booked sites 10-16! I wonder if there are any interlopers in there? Since they are all contiguous, I am thinking not. Who booked the big RV pull-through at site 14?
